How to interpret local sampling support
Tile colors identify stations; intensity and hatching identify sampling support. Full means both adjacent occasions were sampled; partial means one was sampled; no local sampling means neither was sampled. Tiles are centered at the same interval start year as their survival estimates. These annotations do not measure posterior precision and never hide estimates. During occasions with no accepted effort, detection probability was fixed at zero. Apparent survival remains estimated by the hierarchical model and broader encounter histories. All displayed values are posterior model estimates, including those with sampling at both endpoints.
Sampling effort · usable 12-m net-hours
Each bar represents accepted usable effort in a sampling year. Open circles on the baseline mean exactly 0 net-hours. All rows share the same effort scale and calendar axis as the apparent-survival figure. The accepted inputs contain no missing effort values.
Capture support · individuals and recaptures
Darker cells indicate more individuals recorded; counts describe encounter support, not abundance. Interannual recaptures count individuals encountered that year who had been encountered in an earlier year.
Reading apparent survival
Apparent survival describes the probability that an individual survives and remains available to the monitored population between sampling occasions. Mortality and permanent emigration cannot generally be distinguished.
Populations with more information are estimated primarily from their own capture histories, while populations with less information borrow statistical strength from the broader monitoring network. ST-CJS allows species to have their own annual trajectories within stations.
